Outreach
We are very interested in all kinds of educational outreach programs. So far we have been involved in tango workshops for tango festivals in Holland for amateur musicians, educational demonstration workshops for children in Paris, France and tango ensemble coaching in the UK as well as educational and audience participation concerts.
Here is a summary of the kind of workshops we currently propose but we are always open to new suggestions.
Tango Music Workshops
We have 6 main offers:
1 - Tango Music Workshop for musicians (all ages/levels)
2 - Tango Music Conference or Introduction
3 - Tango Music Styles Talk
4 - Tango Music Coaching for Ensembles
5 - Tango Music Arranging and improvising
6 - Dance and Music Workshops
Each of these will be adapted to the level and age of the people involved. We can also adapt the length to whatever suits you, from a 30 minute presentation up to a 3 hour workshop with a performance at the end. It all depends upon what you’re looking for and what your budget is.
1- Tango Music Workshop These workshops will teach players how to play the different styles and techniques used in tango music from the last 100 years. The arrangements are written for the combination and level of participants and are therefore open to all kinds of instrumentation. The traditional line-up is violins, viola, cellos, bass, piano, voice and bandoneon but this can easily incorporate flute, clarinet, guitar and accordion.
These workshops have been carried out so far as day events in festivals, introductory sessions in arts centres or term events in conservatoires. In some cases the final goal is to play the learned pieces in public.
2- Tango Music Conference /Introduction
The conference retraces the history of Argentinean tango through the evolution of its musical parameters, from its origins to the present day. We will present the most important musicians within their social contexts, which allows us to approach the resulting different styles of interpretation.
The conference also has visual support (photos, dvds) and musical examples (mp3s). There is also a small leaflet that will be handed out showing the most important periods in tango history, including some photos, a bibliography and discography.
3 - Tango Music Styles Talk
This talk goes far more into depth about 6 of the most important tango orchestras in the history of tango. There will be a powerpoint presentation, youtube videos, mp3s and a PDF to download and print beforehand with musical examples. This is for those who wish to deepen their knowledge on the details and nuances of tango orchestra music.
4 - Tango Music Coaching for Ensembles
This is destined for small groups (duos up to sextets) or for other pre-formed groups made of various instrumentation. The arrangements proposed cater to different levels within the same group if needed, and teach the players about the musical language of tango which include:
- Rhythmic aspects, especially in the accompaniment (marcato, syncopation, bordoneo)
- The phrasing of melodies and themes; rhythmic freedom and ornamentation with reference to the written text
- The different ways of playing: alternating legato/staccato, special sound effects and percussion (chicharra, glissando, arrastre, mandolin…) and the techniques needed to play them.
- For polyphonic instruments (piano, guitar, accordion) and according to the level of the players, harmonic analysis, and typical musical figures and patterns, re-harmonisations and subsitutions.
5 - Tango Music Improvisation
Two ways of approaching tango interpretation have always co-existed: written arrangement and a more spontaneous, improvised one. In both cases the work starts with a theme and chord chart.
This workshop proposes a lively approach using both methods cited above and after having learnt the rhythmic accompaniments, ways of interpreting the melodies, the exploration of second voices, the group will also experiment with different textures according to different parts of the theme and play the different musical roles. The writing down will work as a memory aid and also record the framework of the arrangement.
6 - Dance and Music Workshop
This workshop is essentially for people who already dance tango and would like to understand the music better in order to be able to dance better and with more creativity and reaction to the music. From Di Sarli to orchestras like Pugliese which can sometimes be seen as being too difficult to dance to - we will show you how to listen to these orchestras and how to imitate musical gestures in dance.
Pricing & Conditions
Pricing is according to number of teachers required and how long the workshops will last. An example would be for a workshop of 2 hours with one teacher doing the tango music workshop the price would be 250£ plus travel from London.
This includes all sheet music which will be sent beforehand.
We ask you to provide speakers and projectors for the powerpoint slides and access to your internet for the youtube videos. We will bring a computer.
